On trial

MSS Lasers is holding an open house from 17-18 March 2010 to celebrate the opening of its new 16,000ft² Technical Centre in Rugby for refurbished laser profiling machines and new nitrogen generation equipment.

The company is keeping its existing premises – so will be doubling its capacity. The new facility will allow customers to see a range of fully operational CNC lasers from different manufacturers and consult with technicians who will be on hand during the event.

Refurbishment work on the lasers offered will be carried out at the original factory, with final testing, troubleshooting and demonstrations taking place in the new unit. This two stage process enables the company to offer machines with a warranty, in ‘as new’ condition, and at a fraction of the price of a comparable new laser.

Aftersales service is provided by MSS Lasers’ team of five field service engineers, while the new purpose built training room will allow users to take advantage of a technology transfer programme geared towards encouraging competence through knowledge.

Assembly of nitrogen generation plants will also take place at the new facility. These are tailored to the needs of individual customers, providing pure, high pressure gas, on demand.
To encourage companies to implement new technology, MSS Lasers will be offering a free (subject to conditions), no obligation trial of both laser machines and nitrogen generators with an option for low cost rental to make equipment acquisition as easy as possible.

Neil Jackson, general manager for MSS Lasers commented: “Our aim is to offer our customers the type of experience, and the professional levels of service and support, you would expect to receive when purchasing a new CNC laser. Our expertise in laser cutting takes the uncertainty out of purchasing used equipment. Furthermore, our knowledge of the laser cutting process enables us to customise our nitrogen generators to suit the demands of each user.”

Southern hits new highs

Last month’s Southern Manufacturing & Electronics Show has been hailed a success by both organisers European Trade & Exhibition Services (ETES) and participants.

Record numbers of visitors attended the show over the two days, drawn by the opportunity to meet suppliers from virtually every branch of industry under one roof.

The show is renowned for its diversity and this year visitors and exhibitors alike were upbeat about the show. Paul Brooker, managing director of Creative Instrumentation commented: "The show's been absolutely superb. We're getting excellent results - even better than last year." Martin Canham of Harting added: "We were successful here last year and this time is just as good with plenty of good quality leads that should develop into decent prospects. Qualitetch's Michelle Laws concurred: "We are very positive about being here. It's definitely the most important show to be at as far as we are concerned."
Support for the Southern Manufacturing & Electronics Show, and the co-located Auto Aero Show has grown year on year since the event's relocation to Farnborough three years ago. Show director, Phil Valentine, said: "From the response we've been getting it is quite clear that the majority of participants now view Southern Manufacturing & Electronics as a key national event as well as a regional show. Pre-bookings for this year's event were up 15% on 2009; visitor numbers up 20% and seminar pre-bookings up 28%.”

"He continued: “We are delighted with the success of the show and it’s encouraging to see that business prospects seem to be improving for many SMEs.”

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough on February 16th and 17th 2011. Meanwhile, the next show in the ETES regional calendar of industrial events is North and North West Manufacturing Technology 2010, to be held at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton on the 5th and 6th of May.

DavyMarkham joins Indian infrastructure group

Heavy engineering company, DavyMarkham has been acquired by India’s leading engineering procurement and construction company, Hindustan Dorr Oliver (HDO) – a subsidiary of 1 billion turnover IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects which provides engineered solutions and technologies in liquid solid separation applications. The acquisition provides HDO with an entry into the heavy engineering sector.

DavyMarkham’s managing director, Kevin Parkin and financial director, Duncan Hay, will continue in their current roles, along with the management team.

DavyMarkham is a 180 year old manufacturing company based in Sheffield, UK and is involved in the design, manufacture and assembly of large equipment used in the mining, quarrying, power generation, oil, gas and nuclear sectors. It supplies international markets with tunnelling and mine hoisting equipment, and also undertakes the machining of individual components weighing up to 350 tonnes. It provides total engineering capabilities for large turnkey projects, managing the whole process from engineering design, fabrication, machining to installation and commissioning of heavy and complex components and assemblies.

“It is great news for DavyMarkham’s customers, employees and suppliers, since HDO along with its parent is financially very strong, very growth orientated and dedicates itself to continuous improvement in all fields of its business,” said Mr Parkin. “There are considerable synergies between ourselves and Hindustan Dorr-Oliver, while IVRCL’s commercial aspirations in markets like nuclear energy match ours perfectly.

“DavyMarkham was on the verge of closure four years ago, but with the financial support of our buyout partners, Endless, we have been able to turn around the business and make it an attractive acquisition prospect,” he concluded.

Double take

Two related events will take place at Birmingham’s NEC from 29-30 September 2010 – the ‘Aero Engineering 2010 Exhibition & Congress’ and the ‘Composites Engineering Show 2010’.

“The response to the co-location has been excellent and we expect a high take up from visitor groups for both shows nationwide,” commented event director, Ian Stone, managing director of organisers Leading Edge Events & Media.

Aero Engineering 2010 will provide a platform tailored to the needs of the UK’s aerospace/aviation engineering industries, from specialist aerospace subcontracting services and advanced machining technology through to inspection and test, modelling and simulation. “The event fills a vital void in providing a platform where buyers and sellers can meet and do business in a focused aero engineering environment,” Mr Stone added.

Building on the success of the inaugural Aero Engineering 2009 Manchester-based event where some 800 companies and organisations participated, Mr Stone predicts that the relocation to the NEC will provide a more centralised venue.

Aero Engineering 2010 will help visitors identify suppliers, technologies and presentations in their area of interest, using dedicated focus technology trails that will embrace: design, modelling, simulation and materials; machining, manufacturing and assembly; inspection and test; avionics/electronics and electrical; subcontracting/supply chain engineering and; maintenance, repair and overhaul.

Running concurrently on the same show floor, the Composites Engineering Show 2010 reflects rising UK wide demand for composites design and manufacturing – from high volume consumer applications to high performance advanced engineered products. The show’s significance is reflected in support from key stakeholder organisations including CompositesUK, NetComposites and the Knowledge Transfer Network.

Mr Stone explained: “The continuing demand for information on composites from companies looking to learn more about the technology as well as those already part of the supply chain spurred us to launching the UK’s first dedicated showcase for the composites community. Composites are now being used more and more across number of market sectors including aerospace, motorsport, renewable energy, industrial and medical. The Government’s commitment to the technology was reflected in its recent £22 million endorsement of composites development.”

Exhibits and technical presentations at the show will cover all composites types, including fibre reinforced polymers, sandwich and cored structures, fibre metal laminates, metal matrix, ceramic matrix and carbon composites. The event will showcase material manufacturers and suppliers, design, analysis and simulation technologies, production processes – including machining and tooling, composite components and structures; and composites maintenance engineering.
