Happy New Year and welcome to the January issue of Aerospace Manufacturing magazine. My New Year’s resolution for 2021 is not to make one, because it’s about the only promise I’ll ever keep. With the Christmas festivities now a distant memory, it’s back to a new year of new normality. Recent events going on around the world still have me shaking my head in disbelief, but at least the UK has finally got Brexit done. Perhaps a change in the way we do business with the rest of the world will see the UK manufacturing more of the kind of products this once great industrial superpower used to make – something the engineers among us will take some comfort from what has been a long and divisive period in our political history. Meanwhile, we’ve entered another period of enforced lockdown. For me, these extended periods of quiet reflection offer moments of lucidity where I get an opportunity to think straight. It’s the same whenever I go on holiday. I can be sitting on the beach somewhere, but I’ll still be staring out into the distance thinking note to self: fitness, diet, healthy food, be nice. What I’m trying to say is that we all need some ‘quiet time’ in our busy working routines. We all need time to think it through and resolve how we can do things differently. The more we reflect on our tasks, the more often we have the opportunity to modify and refine them. Teachers call it experiential theory. Well, there’s a lesson for us all then. I wish you all a successful and prosperous 2021. But here’s one final thought: be kind to yourselves and make time in your busy work schedules to do some quality thinking.
