AIM Altitude’s Generation 2 Autonomous Lighting Dimmer (ALD) has been shortlisted for a prestigious Crystal Cabin Award in the Electronic Systems category.

The original Generation 1 ALD was developed by AIM Altitude as a means to autonomously control monochrome LED lighting within monuments. With no connection to the aircraft data protocols or manual interaction from cabin crew, the LED loads automatically rise and fall in intensity in response to the surrounding cabin lighting.

The new Generation 2 ALD began flying in late 2016 and was developed by AIM Altitude to meet Boeing 787 lightning-strike requirements and to allow potential for switched input where multiple zones are required. The ALD can drive approximately 10m of linear LEDs as a standalone product, or extra ALDs can be added to the chain to increase the load capacity to an effectively infinite number.

The ALD provides a seamless transition in lighting ambiance that ensures lit monuments spontaneously align with the cabin ambience. The ALD can be used to control mood lighting in seats, galleys, inside closets, and in social areas, such as coffee and cocktail bars.

The Generation 1 ALD has been in service since November 2012 and is certified and flying on board the following airlines and aircraft types:

  • Qatar Airways Airbus A350-900, A380-800, Boeing 787-8

  • British Airways Boeing 787-8 & -9

  • Swiss International Boeing 777-300ER

  • Kuwait Airways Boeing 777

The Generation 2 ALD launched on the AeroMexico 787-9 delivered on 20th October 2016. AIM Altitude holds all the intellectual property rights for the ALD and both Generations have approval under FAA and EASA Type Certificates.

The winners of the Crystal Cabin Awards will be announced at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg on 4th April 2017.
