According to Modig Machine Tool president, David Modig, the company has been on the cutting edge of technology for over 70 years – and that’s where it intends to stay. In a Q&A session, Aerospace Manufacturing hears more.

Modig Machine Tool has always been at the forefront of innovation in developing high performance machining centres that provide its customers with a competitive advantage through increased productivity, exceptional cost-effectiveness, and unrelenting precision. In addition to the civil aerospace sector, Modig is also becoming very attractive for military and defence advanced machining solutions.

Q) Please provide a brief potted history of your company and its ethos?

Modig Machine Tool president, David Modig

Modig Machine Tool was founded in 1947 in Virserum, Sweden with a focus on building best in class machines. Modig lathes, universal drills and machining centres became well-known throughout the world. During the 1980s, Modig started to develop high speed machining centres, and since the production of its first high speed machining centre in 1987, has continuously redefined the world’s machining standards.

Today, Modig is still family-owned and is known as one of the world’s leading companies in manufacturing premium performance machining centres. With over 11,000 machines sold worldwide, the Modig brand is seen as a trusted partner for our customers.

From the very beginning, Modig has continuously redefined the world’s machining standards. With technical ingenuity in our DNA and the ability to absorb customer needs, we can make the ‘impossible’ possible, and create products that define the latest technology industry standard. In other words, Modig means innovation!

Q) Please update me with your latest product launch and aerospace customer success story?

We have a new product launch - a machine that will totally change the landscape of machining. We are ready to say that the launch of this machine is the start of the revolution of machining. We have been designing this patent pending machine for years and are just weeks from its global release. The industry has been waiting for the next shift in performance – the next generation of machining.

In terms of a customer success story, Asco Industries was looking for a precise finishing machine for the manufacture of titanium military aircraft components. The key characteristics required were a robust and precise machine that would ensure a good and stable quality output.

The RigiMill MT is a fixed-gantry, moving table solution

From that viewpoint, we provided our RigiMill Moving Table (MT) moving table gantry machine solution. This concept was perfectly aligned with Asco’s rigidity requirements and in addition, Modig ensured that the machine would be capable of reaching the required precision, which it does.

Asco Industries purchased one of the first RigiMill table gantry machines manufactured by Modig. The design and development of this new concept brought some challenges to the project, but Modig took this opportunity with full commitment. The flexibility, competence, and persistence of Modig and its Belgian local partner, Gima Machines, were key in the machine deployment.

The machine has proven to meet the required precision and is a good solution for the required capabilities. In addition, we recently achieved 100% uptime with an average of 98%.

Modig Machine Tool’s headquarters in Kalmar, Sweden

Modig had the machine installed at the Kalmar facility on a foundation. This made it possible to have a full Modig/Gima/Asco team testing and fine-tuning of the machine before shipping it to Belgium. Not all machine builders offer this for a machine of this size, and it was seen an important strength seen by Asco Industries. Another positive point is the dedicated effort that Modig puts into the design and visual aspect of the machine.

Q) What are the types of performance demands placed on you by your customers?

The customer relationship has always been an important part in the Modig family spirit, and the after-sales support. Our customers are particularly happy with our machines’ fast cycle times and uptime. Our customers’ machine tools are mainly used for manufacturing wing ribs, wing stringers, wing spars, seat tracks, floor beams, hinges, latches and links.

Q) What kinds of productivity benefits and synergies do your customers enjoy from the successful implementation and use of your CNC machine tools?

Our machines enable Modig customers to achieve world-class quality and shortened production times which lead to decreased, overall manufacturing costs. We provide solutions that help make our customers production more efficient. We give them high precision and productivity with reduced cycle times of up to 40 to 70%, as well as optimised production with reduced waste material and full turnkey fixturing solutions.

Q) How much importance do you place on Industry 4.0 and the advent of ‘smart tools’ in general?

We are working on the machine tool health monitoring in order to optimise the machines and increase the efficiency.

Q) What particular aspect has helped your company get through the pandemic crisis?

We are grateful that we have been able to keep all employees during the pandemic. Our production lines have been intact through strong, good work from the Modig team. We are thankful for all our business partners, clients, distributors, agents, and employees, that spend tireless hours helping us provide the highest levels of machine tools and keeping everyone believing in the Modig way. We are fortunate to have entered a growing market with the electric vehicle (EV) industry which keep on growing and keep our company busy.

Q) What are your thoughts about the fact that there won’t be any tradeshows for the foreseeable future?

It is sad not to be able to meet face-to-face because actual meetings ultimately provide much more mutually beneficial value in the end. We are longing to meet you all at the tradeshows soon again.

Q) What kinds of machine tool developments will we be seeing in the future?

We will eventually move from conventional machines and evolve to more special advanced machines to achieve higher productivity.

Q) Finally, what differentiates your company from the competition?

We are five years ahead of our competition. Our innovative, cutting edge technology and turn key solutions puts us in the forefront. This is all combined with the genuine family spirit that has been within the company from the beginning.
