British expertise assists new Chinese and Russian airliners

China's C919 and Russia's Superjet SJ100, are both being manufactured in Manchester by EDM, not as finished aircraft but as an engineering mock-up and a flight crew simulator.

Two of the world's most important new passenger aircraft projects,

The C919 is an all new 160-seat narrow-body airliner and the engineering mock-up is being supplied under a direct contract from COMAC and represents a significant engineering design and construction challenge for EDM.
The 18m fuselage complete with a high fidelity flight deck, cockpit displays, passenger seating, IFE system and other detailed features, is scheduled to be completed and air freighted in sections for display on the COMAC stand at the Zhuhai air show in China this November.

The contract represents a major expansion of EDM's relationship with China's aerospace industries. Over the past two years it has supplied a Boeing 787 door trainer to China Southern, four 737 door trainers for Xiamen Airlines and has also manufactured and supplied other simulators including an A330 door trainer to the Shanghai Training School, run by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
Kevin Bird, managing director of EDM, said: “Following the successful completion and delivery of the above projects this order for a total fuselage from COMAC is an endorsement of our ability to replicate the real thing in all important detail.

“Once completed in our Manchester facility it will be the first time anyone will be able to sit inside China's flagship aerospace project. We are very proud of our good relationship with China and we welcome the opportunity to expand our business partnership with COMAC as they develop their other passenger aircraft such as the ARJ21 and future derivatives of the C919, the C929 and C939.

“We have worked hard not just on the excellence of our products but also on developing partnerships in China that have given us the foundation on which to build these export opportunities.”

The trainer is currently undergoing factory acceptance at the EDM facility in Manchester and it accurately reproduces a section of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 design in terms of features and size in order to provide the realism required during training.
