The Bristol-based Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS), an independent, not-for-profit specialist in digital engineering capability, has appointed a new head of advanced simulation to support the development of advanced simulation techniques.

Davide Bianchi, who has over 15 years’ experience in structural engineering across the aerospace sector, joins CFMS from engineering services consultancy Bristol Aero where he was head of programmes. His specialist skills stem from working on international projects for industry primes such as Airbus and Jet Aviation Basel, which includes providing structural analysis support for the A400M in Bremen, A320 Sharklets and A350 wings in Filton.

The new role has been created to provide strategic leadership for one of CFMS’s core service lines – Advanced Simulation – and will be based at CFMS’s headquarters in Bristol and Bath Science Park. Bianchi will manage a team of engineers, providing in-depth technical knowledge and expertise working across Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to help high value manufacturers harness the capabilities of innovation through advanced simulation.

Bianchi said: “I’m incredibly passionate about helping manufacturers realise the potential of advanced simulation and how it can reduce time and cost during the design process. I’m delighted to be joining the team at CFMS who specialise in designing technologies that support industrial digitalisation. I’m excited to be part of a team that pushes the boundaries of simulation to increase industry confidence in this technology, developing innovative products that will transform the digital engineering community.”

Ian Risk, chief technical officer at CFMS, said: “Davide is an expert in structural design, with experience of working on a variety of high-profile projects. He will play a crucial role at CFMS, inspiring our growing team of advanced simulation engineers to develop new digital technologies that help to realise the possibilities of innovation through advanced simulation. Davide truly understands the modelling challenges high value manufacturers face and will help showcase new technologies across a range of industrial sectors.”

Through its four core service lines – Data Science, Advanced Simulation, Model Based Engineering, and Engineering Computing Services – CFMS enables high value manufacturers to accelerate design and manufacturing productivity and competitiveness for their products, processes and services.
