Deal set to boost British high-tech manufacturing skills

Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies has announced a strategic partnership agreement with A|D|S.

The partnership will allow enhanced collaboration between the two organisations, simplifying the provision of skills in line with feedback from companies to assist and support the aims and objectives of both employers and the sector's workforce in the UK.

Peter Rogers, president of A|D|S and CEO of Babcock International Group commented: “Consistently improving productivity and competitiveness in advanced manufacturing and engineering will be crucial to the continued growth of the UK economy. The UK is number one in Europe and second only to the US globally in aerospace and defence. This has not come about by accident but by hard work and significant investment. A|D|S and Semta aim to harness our networks of members and stakeholders to focus minds on delivering a highly-skilled and modern workforce of the future, leaving a legacy of excellence for the long-term benefit of the country.”

The agreement will maximise the effectiveness of the industry's voice to the government when it comes to skills needs via the joint leadership of A|D|S, and Semta's Aerospace and Defence Sector Strategy Group (ADSSG). The partnership will also see Semta and A|D|S work together to secure the support of national and regional stakeholders.

The latest research shows 7% of aerospace companies are reporting hard-to-fill vacancies which is double that experienced across all sectors, most of these are related to skills shortages In addition, 29% of aerospace companies reported skills gaps (19% across other sectors), primarily at a managerial, professional and craft level.
