Delphin workholding technology helps cut downtime

A major aerospace subcontractor has added both flexibility and increased productivity to its CNC machining operation.

Using System 3R's Delphin workholding technology, Tooltech has achieved significant savings in wasteful downtime by reducing the amount of times a job may need to be removed from a machining centre during its manufacture.

“We had won an order for a new tooling suite and would have lost at least 30 minutes set-up time each time we removed the aluminium block to reposition the workpiece or change the cutters,” said Tooltech's managing director, Mark Newcombe. “With Delphin providing assured repeat accuracy and positioning, we were able to save between 20-25% of machine time on our vertical machining centre as there is no need to reset the datum.”

Delphin is a modular zero-point clamping system that enables the machine table to be equipped with position-determining chucks. By allowing the maximum area of the machine table to be used, set-ups can be performed outside the machine so that no time is wasted and the machine can keep cutting with very little changeover delay.

“Our investment in Delphin paid for itself after the first job and it is contributing to our continued successful growth in the highly demanding and challenging aerospace industry,” added Newcombe.”
