Granta enhances material intelligence for PLM

Granta Design has announced new versions of key software components that integrate its Granta MI materials information management system with PLM systems, and that support CAD and CAE.

An increasing number of engineering enterprises are rolling out programs to digitalise their materials information, in order to reduce risk, drive innovation, and save time and cost. Granta MI enables this process, and helps to ensure correct, consistent definitions of materials throughout the product lifecycle. The latest releases build on real experience of optimising customer implementations worldwide, and support the upcoming Granta MI Version 11.

Granta MI is the industry standard for building a ‘gold source’ database of corporate materials information. This must be integrated with the product definitions in corporate PLM and CAD systems in order to ensure access, consistency, and traceability for important materials information across the enterprise. Examples include providing properties for design and simulation, supporting substance compliance analytics, and re-using past experience of applying materials.

But every company’s engineering IT environment is different. So configuring ‘material intelligence’ for these environments requires flexible technologies. Granta’s MI:Enterprise Connect and MI:Materials Gateway tools, used separately or in combination, provide this flexibility.

At Siemens PLM Connection Europe event in Berlin, Granta demonstrated the new release of MI:Enterprise Connect and its use with Teamcenter PLM. This enables approved catalogs of materials to be synchronised between Granta MI and the Integrated Material Management (IMM) module in Teamcenter, so that they become accessible to all Teamcenter users. Version 2 supports the use of sub-types in Teamcenter, allowing for a richer definition of the material. And it can make use of the full power of PLM workflow tools by automatically triggering workflows to act on updated information.

MI:Materials Gateway enables direct access to a Granta MI database from an app within PLM, CAD, or CAE. It delivers a seamless user experience, faster than ever with Version 5, saving valuable time and effort in simulation and design. Added features include the ability to assign multiple materials to parts in PLM or CAD, e.g., PTC’s Windchill or Creo.

This enables consideration of material alternatives. MI:Materials Gateway supports Teamcenter and NX from Siemens PLM, CATIA and Abaqus/CAE from Dassault Systèmes, Windchill and Creo from PTC, Altair HyperMesh, ANSYS Workbench, and Autodesk Inventor.
