SC21 is the key for Warwick-based CEM

SMT Developments has joined just a handful of CEMs to become a signatory to the SC21 quality programme.

Designed by the defence and aerospace industries to enhance competitiveness and efficiency throughout the supply chain, the adoption of SC21 by the Warwick-based PCB prototyping and assembly specialist marks another step towards securing full ASEN 9100 accreditation by the end of 2010.

According to managing director Phil Rowley, SC21 has been instrumental in driving forward further improvements. “We already hold ISO 9000 accreditation, but needed something to differentiate ourselves from the competition and open up new opportunities in aerospace and defence. With support from the West Midlands MAS (Manufacturing Advisory Service), we are using SC21 to identify areas where we can work faster, smarter and more efficiently.”

Practical improvements realised at SMT as a result of the SC21 programme include a significant increase in on-time delivery and right first time scores in excess of 98% - impressive given the complex nature of many of the projects handled by the company. Better stock inventory management, enhanced supplier relationships and development opportunities for the 36-strong workforce have further boosted competitiveness. SMT has already secured two IPC manufacturing standards – IPC610 and IPC J – and expects to achieve ASEN 9100 within months.
