Extending its range of solid carbide endmills and slot drills defined by Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal as its ‘Global Standard’, the GSX MILL Series is now available.

The latest milling cutters have been developed based on a fine carbide substrate to increase toughness, have a high transverse rupture strength and provide excellent levels of shock resistance with enhanced orders of consistency and reliability especially in wet cutting conditions.

The GSX MILL Series, covering tools between 1mm and 25mm diameter, has a specialist flute design and large rake angle. The cutters have a wide variation covering two, three and four-flute types with four different lengths of flute available. The flute design and rake angle combination enable very effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone plus the specific design of two cutting edges improves sharpness and extends the type of work that can be machined.

Indeed, each cutting tooth has a gashed land that strengthens the flute and increases resistance to fracturing. Meanwhile, with the inclusion of Sumitomo’s latest Super ZX coating, this enhances resistance to both wear and heat contributing to further improvements to in-cut life.

Endmill and slot drill applications cover surface milling, drilling and grooving with two types of cutting edge profiles. The sharper edged S-Type is ideal for removing inside corners when finish cutting and the strengthened edge C -Type, having a gashed land, creates higher resistance to fracture for both roughing and finishing cycles. There is a wide spectrum of materials covered by both types that the new solid carbide cutters can support, thus helping to reduce tool inventory. These include carbon and alloy steels, hardened steel up to 55HRC, stainless steels, titanium, heat resisting alloys plus cast iron.

The GSX-SLT slot-type cutter is a multi-purpose tool developed for plunge drilling and slot milling having a large rake angle for speedy chip removal. It has a sharp edge making it even ideal for cutting thin sheet material and for use with lighter duty and smaller machining centres and milling machine applications. The cutters are available in two, three and four flutes having between 1.5 x D to 4 x D flute length. There is also a special three flute version for more compound-type milling applications.

Also, within the GSX Mill Series is the GSXVL, which is an anti-vibration square type cutter ideal for shoulder milling with an optimised irregular pitch and lead angle that improves the resistance to chatter on higher speed and feed cycles due to its ability to reduce cutting forces. Rounded land versions are available which also further enhance surface quality.

The Sumitomo GSXB Mill Ball Type cutter has two flutes, a large 30° helix angle which reduces any resistance to cutting forces so is ideal for milling hardened steel up to 60HRC, titanium alloys and cast iron. It is also suitable for softer steels due to an expanded and widened pocket area that increases the effective evacuation of chips.
