Tackling tough materials

Sandvik Coromant (hall 4, stand F11) will be promoting its expertise as a global solutions provider for engine, frame and landing gear machining tasks

, which, the company says, extends far beyond its core cutting tool business. Partnering with many of its clients, Sandvik Coromant provides support including information and advice on applications, manufacturing economics, recycling and value added training. The latter is delivered via its network of 25 Productivity Centres around the world.

Of particular interest to the aerospace sector will be the company's continuous development in meeting the demands of customers working with difficult materials such as heat resistant super alloys (HSRAs), titanium and composites, with complete packages offered.

For instance, for carbon fibre reinforced plastics and stacked materials with metal alloys, Sandvik Coromant has developed the CoroDrill 854 and CoroDrill 856 diamond coated solid carbide drills. The former features a ‘spurred' geometry to combat particular splintering or fraying problems, while the latter with its double angled geometry for soft entry and exit, has been developed to counter delamination in resin-rich materials. Another new product, this time for the demands of titanium milling, are insert grades S30T and S40T, which offer improved levels of reliability and endurance. Both grades are available for use with a variety of CoroMill cutters in operations such as face, shoulder, long-edge and high feed milling, as well as plunging, profiling and slot milling tasks.

Insert grade S30T combines the properties of a micro-grain carbide substrate with a wear resistant PVD coating. This enables very sharp cutting edges that resist fatigue and micro-chipping, offering machine shops longer times in cut at higher cutting speeds. It combines ultra-tough cemented carbide with a thin CVD coating to provide a grade that withstands vibrations and other difficult cutting conditions for longer times in cut.
